The original spelling derived directly from the Japanese was Jujitsu. As the popularity and practice of this martial art spread across Europe, the spelling and pronunciation was forced to change. This occurred during World War II, when the name Jujitsu had to be changed to Jiu-jitsu. This name-change occurred because the Germans occupying the area at the time claimed that the name resembled the word "Jew".Jiu-Jitsu,Martial Arts

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes getting an opponent to the ground in order to utilize ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground. A more precise way of describing this would be to say that on the ground, using mechanical strength instead of pure physical strength.

Training and knowing Jiu Jitsu comes with great responsibilities, one cannot just assume any situation calls for violence and fighting. Jiu Jitsu in its purest form can be an asset, if no other options are available. Progression in Jiu Jitsu doesn't simply consist of learning new techniques. Rather, it entails a deeper understanding of why certain techniques work and when to use them. Too often we become fixated on learning a plethora of new techniques, without spending enough time on developing strategy. As any chess master would likely point out, success is a function of both the pieces you have available to you and the strategy you employ with them. n analogy is often drawn between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and chess; during a match, you are constantly adapting your strategy to the movements of your opponent, just as you would in a game of chess.
